These were kingdoms ruled by European knights and were known as The Latin Principalities. The knightly orders rose to great wealth and influence after conquering Jerusalem. Along with taking the plunder, they then worked as caravan guards and moneylenders.

There were many more crusades that came after; popes would continue to sanction official, widespread invasions of the Middle East until the end of the thirteenth century; and the crusading heritage was greatly preserved by the efforts of Christian knights in Spain during the Reconquista. Later crusades were frequently nothing more than politically driven power plays by popes, undertaken against their political rivals. Technically, the Holy League, an army assembled from numerous Central and Eastern European kingdoms and sent to battle the Ottoman Empire in 1684, was the final crusade. While none of the later crusades were successful in capturing territory in the Middle East, they did, as previously mentioned, inspire a relentless desire to overthrow and destroy the now centuries-old Muslim kingdom of Spain. They also gave rise to the Christian belief in the potential "holiness" of war itself.
